Obituary

J. E. Martin entered into eternal rest during the early morning hours on Friday, May 30, 2025, at the Callie and John Rainey Hospice House.

J. E. was born in Starr, SC on July 4, 1943, to Jake and Annie Ruth Berry Martin.  J E attended New Deal High School, and he was a 1963 graduate.  After graduation he joined the U.S. Army, and he served twelve and one-half years.  During his time in service, he served two terms in Vietnam (1965-67 and 1968-70) and one term in Korea.  He received many medals during his service including the Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal.

After his military service J.E. worked at W.R. Grace Construction, where he was the plant manager.

J.E. was a very family-oriented man and he loved doing things with his family, which included traveling.  He never met a stranger and was willing to help wherever he could.

J.E. joined Generostee Baptist Church at an early age and in his later years, he served as an usher, sang on the Senior Choir and he was a member of Gentlemen by Choice.  He also served as a Deacon at Mt. Zion CME Church in Cross Anchor, SC.

J.E. leaves to cherish fond memories, his wife of thirteen years, Nora Martin, of the home; two sons, Joseph Martin (Sheila) and Joshua Martin (Melissa), both of Spartanburg, SC; four daughters, Penelope Strickland, Huntsville, AL; Michelle Gist (Chris), Tamasha Johnson (Kevin) and Contessa Young, all of Anderson, SC; one brother, Clyde Martin (Patricia), of Anderson, SC; two sisters, Rozena Martin and Ruby Williams (Bobby), both of Anderson, SC; twenty-three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

J.E. was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers, John Lennon Martin, James Martin and L.M. Martin; two sisters, Bessie Lou Campbell and Shirley Mae Hammond.

The Funeral Service for Mr. J.E. Martin will be held at 1 pm on Wednesday, June 4, 2025, at Generostee Baptist Church. The body will be in the church at 12 noon. Viewing will be 3-7 pm Tuesday, June 3, 2025, at the funeral home.

Interment will be 10 am Thursday, June 5, 2025, at MJ Dolly Cooper Veterans Cemetery.

The Family is at their respective homes.
