James C. Mattison Jr., 87, of 5 Mattison Drive, Honea Path, SC, widower of Pearlie G. Lincoln Mattison, died Saturday, December 30, 2017, at AnMed Health Medical Center.
Born in Honea Path, SC, he was the son of James Claude Mattison Sr. and Willie Mae Creswell Mattison. At an early age James joined Liberty Baptist Church and was a faithful member throughout his life, where he served as a Deacon, past member of the D. Walker choir, and was very instrumental in the construction of the Biblical Garden at Liberty. After college, James relocated to Washington, DC, where he worked as an Educator in the DC Public School System. In 1981, after retiring, he returned to South Carolina where he taught school in Laurens, SC and worked as a Rehabilitation Counselor in Georgia.
He leaves to cherish fond memories, his daughter Celeste Mattison-McCray (Dwain Sr.), Waldorf, MD.; two sons, Wendell Wayne Mattison (Sheila), Memphis, TN and Darin LeoNard Mattison, Honea Path, SC; two brothers, Broadus Mattison, Columbia, MD and Johnny Mattison of Honea Path, SC; sister, Betty Jane Mattison Black, Honea Path, SC; seven grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; daughter-in-law, Cynthia Mattison; sisters-in-law Bettye J. Mattison and Judy Mattison; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
James Jr. was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Claudia Mattison, one son, Sherman Douglas Mattison, parents, James Sr. and Willie Mae Mattison, sister, Evelyn Mattison Wright, brothers, Marvin and Rufus Mattison, brother-in-law, Eugene Wright, sisters-in-law Essie Pearl Mattison and Dorothy Mattison.
The funeral service is 12 noon Saturday, January 13, 2018, at Liberty Baptist Church with burial to follow in the church cemetery. The body will be placed in the church Saturday at 10:30 am and the family will receive friends from 11 am until the hour of service.
The family is at the home.
