Juanita Leverette, 84 years old, affectionately known as “Chee Chee or Cheetah or Nita Bug” went home to rest in the loving arms of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on July 10, 2026, at the Callie and John Rainey Hospice House.
Born June 6, 1942, in Starr, SC, she was the daughter of the late Clifton Maine Leverette and Lonia Watt Leverette. Juanita was a faithful member of the Pleasant Grove Missionary Baptist Church and sang on the Senior Choir. She also attended Mt Moriah Baptist Church in her early years, her father’s home church, and sang for many years with their Gospel Choir.
A graduate of New Deal High School in Starr, SC. She was a retiree from BASF Corporation and enjoyed breakfast outings with her retiree friends at Golden Coral. After she retired from BASF, she continued working at Burger King as a hostess to pass the time and “not just sit around,” as she often said. A deep love for bowling; she bowled with a local team, often winning many team and singles tournaments. Juanita whose kindness, strength, and generous heart touched everyone fortunate enough to know her. Her life was rooted in faith and service, and her legacy lives on in the lives of her many nieces and nephews that she helped raise.
Juanita was preceded in death by her parents, one brother, Johnny Leverette, two sisters, Madge L Thompson and Jimmie Lou Johnson. Her nephews Phillip “Lil Phil” Leverette, Nathaniel “Sweet Daddy” Leverette, Barry “Squirrel” Johnson, and Marques Johnson. Her sister-in-law, whom she adored, Mary Wansley Leverette, and her two brothers-in-law, Phillip Thompson and Jhue Johnson.
Juanita is survived by her last living sibling, Levi Joseph Leverette of Belton, SC. Four nephews: Ralph (Denise) Johnson, Columbia, SC; Levi “Maine” Leverette Anderson, SC; Felton “Jed” Thompson III, Columbia, SC, and Farrell Leverette of Anderson, SC. Four nieces: Jo Eva Smith, Anderson, SC; Wilhelmina Johnson, Anderson, SC; Cynthia Thompson, Belton, SC; and Denise (Wayne) Rhea, Anderson, SC. One great-nephew and two great-nieces whom she reared in the home: Rico Leverette, Sonya (Michael) Bracone, Heather (Roy) Johnson, Anderson, SC. She is also survived by a host of great-nieces, great-great-nieces, great-nephews, great-great-nephews, cousins and dear friends who were like family, especially the Isom/Johnson families, Mary Clemons Pulliam, Gloria Paul, and her aide Wilma Jean Burns, who spent the last year taking great care of her.
Juanita will be remembered by her family and friends for her quiet strength, compassionate heart, and unwavering faith. Though our hearts are heavy with sorrow, we take comfort in knowing she is at peace in the presence of her Lord and Savior. Matthew 25:23 says, “Well done, good and faithful servant, thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things; enter thou into the joy of the lord.
Funeral service is 4:00 pm Saturday at Pleasant Grove Baptist Church, with burial to follow in the church cemetery. Public viewing is on Friday from 3-7 p.m. at the funeral home, and the body will be placed in the church Saturday at 3:00 p.m.
The family is at the home of her great-niece, Sonya (Michael) Bracone, 405 Fox Valley Road, Anderson, SC; they will be receiving visitors on Wednesday from 4-8 p.m; Thursday from 2-8 p.m.; and Friday from 4-8 p.m.
