Life Story of Sylvester “Sly” Pitt

Sylvester “Sly” Pitt, beloved son of Charlie and Verder Pitt, was born on June 1, 1946, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. He was raised with strong values, a loving spirit, and a deep appreciation for family, faith, and hard work.

Sylvester attended school in New Jersey and graduated from Williamstown High School. After graduation, he proudly served his country, first in the United States Navy and later in the United States Army. His time in the military reflected his dedication, discipline, and commitment to serving others.

After completing his military service, Sylvester began a long and dedicated career of service. He worked with the United States Postal Service before joining Mobil Oil, where he faithfully worked for many years until his retirement. Even after retirement, Sly’s strong work ethic continued as he became a business owner and operated his own janitorial service.

In 1991, Sylvester and his family relocated to Starr, South Carolina, where he continued making a difference in the lives of others through Anderson School District 3. He served as a janitor, cafeteria manager, and bus driver. Through each position, he was known for his kindness, dependability, and willingness to help. He touched the lives of countless students, families, and coworkers and left behind a legacy of care and compassion.

Affectionately known as “Sly,” he was a man who truly never met a stranger. His warm smile, humor, generosity, and genuine love for people made everyone feel welcomed and valued. He had a special way of bringing joy to others and was always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.

Sly found great joy in cooking and baking, especially making his famous cheesecakes that became a favorite among family and friends. He also enjoyed fishing, bowling, riding motorcycles, and camping. The memories created during these special moments with loved ones will forever remain treasured.

Above all, Sylvester was a devoted servant of Jehovah and a faithful member of the South Congregation. His love for Jehovah and his dedication to his faith guided his life and influenced the way he treated others—with humility, kindness, love, and compassion.

Sylvester leaves to cherish his precious memory his loving wife of 56 years, Marlene Pitt; his children, Germaine Pitt and Marsyl Armstrong; his grandchildren, Kaleb, Kirsten, Briana, Deavian, and Kayla; and his great-grandchildren, Keyomi, Keyjuan, Auraiyah, and Luna.

He is also remembered by his brothers, Roger Pitt, Larry Pitt Sr., and William Earl Pitt; his sisters, Hattie Pitt and Lucille Pitt; along with nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members, spiritual brothers and sisters, and many dear friends whose lives were blessed by knowing him.

Sylvester was preceded in death by his parents, Charlie and Verder Pitt; his brothers, Louis Steven Pitt, Melvin Pitt, Edward Pitt, Bobby Pitt, and Lavern Pitt; and his sister, Alma Summers.

Though he will be deeply missed, we find comfort in the beautiful memories he left behind and in Jehovah’s promise of the resurrection. His legacy of love, faith, kindness, generosity, and joy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.

A Memorial Service celebrating the life of Mr. Sylvester Pitt will be held on Saturday, August 1, 2026, at the Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses, Anderson, South Carolina. Family and friends are respectfully invited to attend as they gather to honor his life and cherish his memory. The service will begin at 1pm.
