Bettye Mattison Obituary

Betty Jean Gordon Mattison, 79, widow of Marvin Mattison, died Sunday, December 26, 2021, at Condor Health – Anderson.

Bettye was born in Abbeville County, SC, and was the eldest child of Mason Gordon Sr., and Jennie Ruth Burts Gordon. Bettye was a graduate of Geer-Gantt High School.  After graduation she went to Pennsylvania for a few years where she studied music with emphasis on voice lessons.  After she returned home she married her husband Marvin Ray Mattison, who died in 1991, after twenty-nine years of marriage. They were both well known throughout the community.  Bettye was a gentle, strong and faithful woman of many talents – a seamstress, caterer, baker and a foster mom.  She joined Liberty Baptist Church at a young age, and she was very active in the church.  She played piano for the Sunday School, sang soprano on the Senior Choir, was a member of the Missionary Society and member of the Order of Eastern Star, Chapter 367. She also served as Council Woman for Ward Three of Honea Path after her husband passed.  She lived everyday of her life as a testament of her faith in Jesus Christ.  Many referred to her as “Auntie” or Second Mom”, because her heart and words were filled with love and trust.

In January 1962, she married Marvin Ray Mattison and to this union, two children were born, Anthony Ray and Marcia Annette Mattison. They also became parents to Charles Mattison, whom they adopted.

Bettye was preceded in death by the love of her life, Marvin R. Mattison, parents, Johnny and Jennie Gordon, son, Charles Mattison and sister, Helen Gordon Jones.

She leaves to cherish fond memories, son, Anthony (Janice) Mattison, daughter, Marcia Annette (Shawn) Gardner, both of Anderson, SC; foster son, Cheron (Nicole) Heyward-Graham, Albany, NY; brother, Johnny Mason, Jr., Greensboro, NC; sisters, Annie Ruth Stewart and Ellen Dean, both of Greensboro, NC; Shirley (Charles) Smith and Sara Lynn Smith, both of Anderson, SC; daughter-in-law, Takeitha Mattison, Williamston, SC; seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Johnny and Broadus Mattison; one sister-in-law, Betty Black; God-son, Lamar Smith; God-daughter, Salina Williams; nieces, nephews, cousins and many friends.

A graveside service will be held at 1 pm Monday, January 3, 2022, in the cemetery of Liberty Baptist Church and burial will follow the service.  Public viewing will be Sunday, January 2, 2022, from 12 noon - 6 pm in the Marvin R. Mattison Memorial Chapel, D. B. Walker Funeral Services
