On December 6, 2021, Cynthia Yvonne Scotland Hagood departed this life suddenly at the age of 63 in Anderson, SC.
Cynthia leaves to cherish her memory, her mother, Thelma Hagood Cummings; sisters Yvette Cummings Lomax (William), Shandra Cummings, Sonya Scotland and Deidra Scotland; brother, Stan Scotland; and a host of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father Ernest Scotland; her grandparents Nathaniel and Berdie Hagood; and Thelma Scotland.
Cynthia was born November 23,1958, at Anderson Memorial Hospital. She spent most of her early life in Maryland and graduated from Suitland High School in 1976, before joining the United States Air Force. After leaving the military, Cynthia began her career as a phlebotomist at Columbia Hospital for Women in Washington, D.C. She spent the next 25 years working in the medical field.
Cynthia had a big personality and an infectious smile. She had a passion for expressive writing, but her true love was poetry. Her body of work was vast and captured the many aspects of her life's journey. The following short poem is one example.
A long journey ahead, but
She finds gladness in her stead
Awaiting the journey
Not really the destination
Recovery is a minute away
She has found her inner child and she prays
To learn the when and whys of all the passing years
She keeps her eyes to the sky
Knowing finally and for all time
The "Black" girl inside can
Finally heal!
At this time no funeral or memorial service is planned. To honor Cynthia's memory, donations can be made to FoothillsAlliance.org which supports victims of domestic abuse.
