Raymond Wayne Leverette, 85, of 1105 Southwood Street, Anderson, SC passed away Monday, September 12, 2022, at the Callie and John Rainey Hospice House. Born September 14, 1936, he was the son of Samuel C. Leverette and Cleo Newell Leverette.
Raymond attended Northside Elementary School and Westside High School where he graduated in 1954 at age 16. He continued his education at Benedict College where he received his Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Education at age 20. He was a member of Wilson Calvary Baptist Church where he sang on the Senior Choir and really enjoyed working with and teaching the kids in Vacation Bible School. He also worshipped at Nazareth First Baptist in Asheville, N.C.
Raymond spent his summers working as a counselor at “Camp for the Blind” in Spring Valley, New York. He also taught at New Deal High briefly and later moved to Canton, N.C. There, he taught Math and coached the girls’ basketball team. He received his 1st Master’s degree from Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, N.C. and received a 2nd Master’s from N.Y. University. After 30 years of service with the North Carolina school system, he retired and returned to Anderson to take care of his aging parents. Raymond loved to travel and treating his sisters to 2 cross country vacations. Raymond loved animals as was evident by the many feline companions around the house
Raymond is preceded in death by his parents, sister, Mary Clinkscales; three brothers, Sam Henry, Clarence, and Prue Jr. Leverette; two nephews, Frederick Leverette, and Gerald Bryson; and two nieces, Janice Beard and Olivia Gash.
He leaves behind to cherish fond memories his sister, Lila Johnson of Anderson, SC; three nephews Rufus Clinkscales Jr. (Jean), Harry Johnson (Monika), and William Clinkscales (Josephine); four nieces, Juanita Thompson, Vickie Goggins, Denise Vinson, and Delila Gober (Stanley); other relatives and many friends.
Funeral services are 2 pm Sunday at Wilson Calvary Baptist Church with burial to follow in Westview Cemetery. Public viewing will be Saturday from 3 - 8 pm at D. B. Walker Funeral Services and the family will receive friends Saturday from 6-8 pm at 1301 Travis Road, Anderson, SC.
